Pure Desire: Helping Men & Women overcome unhealthy sexual behaviors

“Based on nearly three decades of local church ministry, I have come to truly believe the church is the only HOPE of the world. Also, I know that the majority of men and many of the women sitting in the pews, on the platform, and at the pulpit are losing the battle of sexual purity.” – Dr. Ted Roberts

Author/Speaker Dr. Ted Roberts will be at Central Christian Church:

Wednesday, April 25th 6:30-8:00pm in the Theater!

**Childcare will be provided and is available**

The fact is: Most of us have been affected by unhealthy sexual behaviors directly and/or indirectly at some point in our lives. If you or someone you know is struggling with sexual behavior issues, there is a way out!

I am excited to announce our special guest speaker for this Wednesday, Dr. Ted Roberts, who is the President and co-founder of Pure Desire Ministries International in Gresham, Oregon. He is a certified Sexual Addiction Therapist, as well as the author of many books, including best seller: Pure Desire. Dr. Roberts travels across the globe to lead conferences designed to promote healthy sexual healing and wholeness.

On Wednesday, April 25th… come and learn about a biblical approach to helping men and women overcome unhealthy sexual behavior that is harmful to their social, family, and spiritual well-being. Dr.Ted Roberts, has very practical answers that deal not only with the personal shame of the struggle, but the family systems that fuel the issues.

Paid in Full

This last Friday Matt talked about Forgiveness being a key part of our recovery and healing. Because along the path of healing must lie forgiveness.

Principle 6 says, “Evaluate all my relationships. Offer forgiveness to those who have hurt me and make amends for harm I’ve done to others, except when to do so would injure them or others.”

The first and most important forgiveness is extended from God to us!

Have you accepted God’s forgiveness? And what does God’s forgiveness look like?

The bible says, “Forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.”

Sin includes thoughts because God knows your thoughts; words because God hears what you say; deeds because God sees your acts; and motives, because God knows your heart. Sin includes commission, where you do what God tells you not to do, and omission, where you do not do what God tells you to do. The result then is that we are all sinners by nature and by choice.

Many of us know what it is like to be in debt. It could be student loans, car loans, mortgage, or credit card debt. And that debt just keeps growing and growing. And every month there’s a reckoning. You get a statement in the mail or in the e-mail listing your debt with a payment is due notice.

Now imagine if every month God sent you a letter of reckoning, which he would send us a statement of all the sin debt that we have accrued each month. I’d venture to say all of us would be pretty upside down!

The point here is that we tend to be very keenly aware of all of our financial debt and conveniently unaware of all of our spiritual debt.

But Jesus comes, our great God and Savior, he lives without sin, he dies in our place for our sin to pay our debt to God because the wage for sin is what? Death. So payment in full is death. He pays the debt we could never afford to pay and he cancels it out. So all of our debt, past, present, and future, sin we haven’t even committed yet, is forgiven at the cross of Jesus.

When Jesus says,

“It is finished!” This means our debt is “Paid in Full!”

A potluck changed my life…

Early on in my recovery journey I found myself in this really lonely place. I knew if I was going to make any progress in my recovery I had to change my people, places and play things. But I really didn’t know a lot of people in CR yet. It was incredibly lonely.

Then I was invited to my first potluck at someone’s house. I reluctantly went… What was I thinking… I didn’t know these people and they didn’t know me. As I walked up to the front door with my chips and soda (because that is what the single guy brings right!) everything in me wanted to turn around. In the last moment when I was getting ready to bolt the door came flying open and the person at the door greeted me with a warm welcome and pulled me right into the house, introduced me to everyone and put my chips and soda on the counter. They didn’t even want my chips and soda, all they wanted was me! This was one of the first times I felt accepted not for what I had but for who I was. That was the power of fellowship! I am grateful for that potluck to this day because it truly changed my life.

I have learned the importance of fellowship with other people going in the same direction I am. This Monday night May 2nd we have an opportunity to fellowship at a 51′s baseball game. A whole group of us from CR will be going to the game. We will have tickets available this Friday during CR. Hope you can make it.

What Gorilla?!?!

What does the saying, “800 lb. gorilla in the room” really mean anyways? We have all heard it. Think about that for a moment, and as you ponder that, I submit this….. Perhaps, the gorilla in the room is a “saying” for an obvious truth that is being ignored or goes unaddressed. Perhaps, it’s an expression that applies to an obvious problem or risk no one wants to discuss or take. Still confused? Check out the video below as it paints a perfect picture of the “gorilla.”

From this clip, we can gather this idea of a “gorilla in the room” which obviously refers to a large, unstoppable thing or problem that can and will exert its desires and will into our lives, even if people do their very best to ignore it. In fact, the people in the room who pretend the gorilla is not there have chosen to concern themselves with small and irrelevant issues rather than deal with the looming BIG one…. the gorilla! This just further aids denial.

The bottom line is, the term “gorilla in the room” is used to describe something that should be very obvious. There’s no way you wouldn’t notice that a gorilla was in the room, so mentioning the “gorilla in the room” means that there’s something obvious going on, and someone just doesn’t see it or simply refuses to acknowledge and deal with it! Keep in mind too, that this “something” usually starts out as a small baby monkey, but eventually, if left unchecked, grows up into a full grown gorilla who gains control! With all that said, what “gorilla’s” are you dealing with right now in your life that you know you cannot ignore any longer? What “gorilla’s” have you dealt with in your past and put to rest?

Why take a Moral Inventory of Ourselves?

Any successful business takes time to look at their assets and liabilities. In order to understand the health of the organization there must be a point where they look at the good and the bad. We ran a family business for years and each year we did an annual inventory. We would count all of our inventory to verify what was in stock. Part of the process was getting rid of old obsolete inventory and be able to focus on the good stuff.

The same is true in our lives. In order for us to live a healthy life, we must take time to look at the assets and liabilities in our lives. At Celebrate Recovery we call this doing a Moral Inventory. This is one of the most important steps we can take to live a healthy life. It is important that we take time to look at out lives in the same way. We need to get rid of the old obsolete stuff that really isn’t helpful anymore so we can make more room for the good stuff that is there.

I know there was a time in my life that I had more liabilities than I had assets. I certainly had a lot of good stuff in my life but it was buried with all the junk that had built up in my life. Taking the time to do a Moral Inventory helped me see how things had gotten so bad. There were many ah…ha moments and many tears but the most important thing I got was clarity about what needed to change.

Tonight, at Celebrate Recovery we are beginning to talk about the Moral Inventory. These next few weeks will be life changing! Plan to be there.
